Let Liberty Rise:

How America’s School Children Helped Save the Statue of Liberty

The story of the untold grass roots movement responsible for America’s Statue of Liberty.

In 1876, the island of Manhattan was littered with hundreds and hundreds of crates containing the pieces of a giant present. There was not nearly enough money to construct and erect a statue from France. Despite being at the height of The Guilded Age, none of New York’s millionaires wanted to contribute. Joseph Pulitzer—-mogul and Hungarian immigrant—-spear-headed a campaign through his newspapers for the immigrants of America to band together to get this meaningful symbol built. A surprising community came to his call: school children from across the nation.
